Solidarity Action with Immigrant Hunger Strikers in Tacoma! (PIRC)

  • Portland Federal Bldg. 1220 Southwest 3rd Avenue Portland, OR, 97204 United States

Beginning Monday, April 10th migrants being detained at the Northwest Detention Center (Tacoma, WA) have been on a hunger strike and partaking in work stoppage to protest in-human treatment in the for-profit Immigration prison.

750 detainees, close to half of the people detained in Tacoma, have joined the fight, and the resistance keeps on growing! But, ICE is ramping up their efforts to break the spirit of the hunger strikers by targeting, threatening, and retaliating against them.

One of the places they have threaten to relocate people to is right here in our state of Oregon at the NORCOR prison. We need to uplift the demands of the folks on strike and show that Oregon is in solidarity with them.

Join us this Wednesday at 4 PM to take a firm stand against for-profit immigration prison, an end to unjust deportations, and to stand with the people on Strike in Tacoma! Invite your friends!

Below are the Hunger Strike Demands:
▪ Change the food menu
▪ Lower commissary prices.
▪ Improve hygiene, including the ability to wash clothes with soap and water.
▪ Increase recreation time.
▪ Bring program such as: school and programs to keep our heads occupied and avoid depression mentally.
▪ Improve medical attention.
▪ Increase wages for working detainees (waxing floors, painting, cleaning, cooking, laundry)*
▪ Help speed up the legal process for detainees.

* “Hunger strikers are asking for an increase in the $1 a day they currently receive for running all of the prison’s basic services. Some have even been denied the $1/day payment, and have been given a bag of chips in exchange for several nights of waxing the prison’s floors.”- LatinoRebels
