In the early 1980's, thousands of Central American refugees poured into the U.S., fleeing repression and extensive human rights violations by their governments, only to be denied political asylum by the U.S. simply because their governments were political allies. Definitions of Sanctuary (From Sanctuarynotdeportation.org)
“Offering” Sanctuary: Our congregation commits to offer physical sanctuary (now or in the future) to an immigrant facing a final order of deportation.
“Supporting” Sanctuary: Our congregation commits to stand in solidarity with the Sanctuary Movement and to partner in hospitality work, logistical support and advocacy efforts.
