Accompaniment Program

What is the Accompaniment Program?

The Accompaniment Program exists to support our community members who are forced to navigate the United States’ complicated, outdated, and exploitative immigration proceedings. We train volunteers to walk side-by-side with individuals as they attend I.C.E. check-ins, immigration court hearings, Intensive Supervision Appearance Program appointments, and other mandatory dates during their immigration process. We strive to act in solidarity by providing support, care, and understanding that focuses on listening to the needs and requests of our immigrant community members.

‘‘Being alone in this country makes everything feel impossible and complicated, even the small things. Going to a check-in shouldn’t be a big deal for me, but it was. I was so scared. Having volunteers hold my bag in places I couldn’t take it and tell them and share my family’s number in case something happened they could call them was the only peace I needed in my heart.’’     M, accompanee.

NOTE:

IMIrJ’s vision is one of support in high-risk, high-intensity situations. Most of our current Accompaniments are for I.C.E. check-ins, ISAP appointments, & immigration hearings at the Portland Federal Building Courthouse. That being said, we always strive to meet the needs of our community, so if you have any other situations that might need accompaniment, please don’t hesitate to fill-out our Accompaniment Request form or reach out to us at Accompaniment@imirg.org
