A 2024 Election Information Session: Love at the Center of Immigration
US immigration law is now almost 40 years old. Over the past 15 years, three presidents have struggled to protect the border, provide asylum, and welcome immigrants. What has worked? What have been the greatest challenges? How might immigration policies and programs change under each of the two presidential candidates? What does this mean for Oregon? What is a vision of an immigration system that coheres to UU values? Panelists will present their on-the-ground knowledge of immigration issues in Oregon and answer questions from the Zoom participants.
Who: Moderated by a member of IJAG (LJ), with:
Britt Conroy, Director of Public Policy, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon
Alaide Vilchis Ibarra, Co-Director, Together Lab
Benjamin Fiklin, director, Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice, UU/Hood River (LL to invite)
Purpose:
Learn about the immigration policies and programs of Obama, Trump and Biden
Understand how Harris’ immigration work to date would inform future US immigration policies
Hear from Oregon leaders about what changes are needed for a safe, just and humane immigration system

Learn about the state of migration in the world today
On Wednesday, October 9, 3:30 - 4:30 on Zoom, the International Relations Interest Group will meet to learn about the state of migration in the world today. Climate change, border conflicts, regional prejudices and corporate economic needs result in large movements of populations in search of a safer place to live. In the US, the League's position for immigration policy states “Immigration policies should promote the reunification of immediate families, meet economic, business, and employment needs, and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises."
Three panelists will share their frontline work and research on immigration issues:
Benjamin Ficklin, Organizer and Accompaniment Program Coordinator, Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice
Juliet P. Stumpf, Edmund O. Belsheim Professor of Law, Lewis & Clark Law School
Elliott Young, Professor, History, Lewis & Clark University.
Following their presentations, we will have a robust Q&A session moderated by LWV member Linda Jackson.
